Security+ V7 and the announced V8 transition

On 25 October 2026, CompTIA’s Security+ V7 page identifies SY0-701 as its exam series. It lists up to 90 multiple-choice and performance-based questions,90 minutes, and a 750 passing score on a 100–900 scale. V8 is announced for November 2026. A launch announcement is not evidence that an examination can already be booked in every language.

For SY0-701, the five weighted areas are general security concepts 12%, threats and mitigations 22%, architecture 18%, operations 28%, and programme management 20%. Use these weights to check coverage, not to predict a particular candidate’s question count. Keep your resource version aligned with the examination you will actually sit.

Turn objectives into things you can explain

Read the current objectives before assigning study hours. For each objective, write a plain-language explanation of the problem and the security decision involved. Distinguish a threat from a vulnerability, a preventative control from a detective one, and an identity decision from a network configuration.

Use an illustrative small organisation as a consistent example. Ask how it would control account access, protect a device, notice suspicious activity and restore a service. The example is a learning exercise, not an assertion that one architecture is correct for every organisation.

Worked exercise: investigate an unusual account sign-in

Illustrative scenario: a user reports repeated authentication prompts, and a provided log contains a sign-in from an unfamiliar location. Identify what the evidence actually shows before declaring a compromise. Compare a mistaken password, a changed device, a malicious sign-in and an inappropriate conditional-access configuration.

Build a small evidence table: timestamp, identity, source, outcome and missing information. Explain which action contains a credible risk without destroying useful evidence or unnecessarily interrupting the business. Then distinguish containment from recovery and longer-term prevention. This practises security reasoning; it is not a prescription for handling a live incident without authorisation.

Combine safe exercises with scenario reasoning

Practise in an authorised learning environment. You might review sample access permissions, interpret a provided log or compare recovery approaches. Define the expected outcome, perform the exercise and explain the evidence that supports your conclusion. Never test techniques against systems without permission.

Performance-based preparation should develop the ability to follow requirements and check a result. It should not depend on memorising a screenshot or a sequence from recalled exam material. If you cannot explain why a setting fits the requirement, return to the underlying concept.

Use practice results to choose the next lesson

After an authorised practice session, separate knowledge gaps, uncertain guesses and misread questions. Review correct answers that were guesses as carefully as mistakes. Link each gap to an objective and a specific learning action.

Track fresh questions separately from repeated ones. Recognition can improve a score without improving your ability to solve a new scenario. Do not interpret a preparation provider’s target percentage as CompTIA’s guarantee of readiness. Review coverage and practical confidence across the outline before choosing an appointment.

Questions candidates commonly ask

Do I need Network+ first? CompTIA lists recommended experience, which should be read separately from a compulsory prerequisite. If addressing, name resolution and access concepts are weak, learn them before attempting security scenarios even if you do not sit another examination.

Is 750 equivalent to a fixed percentage? No. It is a scaled score, and dividing 750 by 900 does not establish the raw percentage needed to pass. Do performance-based tasks require memorising a particular interface? Prepare to interpret requirements and verify a result; recalled live tasks are not legitimate study resources.

Should I change versions midway through preparation? Compare the available booking dates, retirement dates, language and objective differences first. If your resources and intended appointment fit V7, an announcement of V8 alone is not a reason to discard all completed learning. A changed appointment may justify revisiting that decision.

Another diagnostic distinction: successful authentication does not prove appropriate authorisation. If a user signs in correctly but can read another team’s restricted records, investigate assigned permissions and data access rather than assuming that stronger passwords alone resolve the issue. Explain which evidence would support the access decision and its correction.
