Choose the applicable official scope

SC-900 introduces security, compliance and identity across Microsoft services. It suits learners who need to explain capabilities and business purpose before administering a production environment. The official study guide lists an outline effective 21 October 2026, so compare older notes against that scope. Create a simple tracker with the objective, a plain-language explanation, an official learning resource and a remaining question. This keeps Microsoft Learn useful as a structured curriculum rather than an endless collection of tabs.

Learn concepts with one organisation

Imagine a consultancy with employees, customer files and remote collaboration. Explain authentication, authorisation, encryption, hashing, shared responsibility and Zero Trust in that setting. An employee can authenticate successfully yet lack permission for a client folder; an encrypted file still needs appropriate access management. Write these distinctions in your own words. If you cannot give a short example, return to the concept lesson before memorising a product name. The examination asks for understanding of capabilities, not merely recognition of marketing language.

Build an identity decision map

Use the Entra section to connect identities, authentication, access management and governance. Ask what should happen when a contractor joins, requests privileged access and finishes the engagement. Identify where multifactor authentication, Conditional Access, access reviews and privileged identity management address different problems. Do not assume that one feature replaces the rest. A practical study artefact is a one-page map showing the event, the control’s purpose and the administrator or business owner who would make the decision.

Separate protection, detection and investigation

For security services, start with a suspicious sign-in followed by an unusual file download. Explain which type of evidence indicates identity risk and which indicates activity involving a device or workload. Then distinguish preventive infrastructure controls from services that detect, correlate or investigate threats. Read the official service overviews linked from the study guide when two names seem similar. Avoid learning every administrative configuration in depth: SC-900 needs a sound account of what the capability does and the situation in which it is useful.

Connect compliance to a data lifecycle

Follow a fictional customer document from creation through sharing, retention and disposal. Classification identifies the information; a sensitivity label can express protection requirements; data loss prevention addresses specified risky actions; retention addresses how information is kept or deleted under policy. These controls solve related but distinct problems. Ask who decides the policy and who implements it. This exercise prevents a common preparation mistake: assuming that applying a label automatically satisfies every security, legal and records-management requirement.

Finish with assessment and targeted repair

Work through the official learning paths, then take a practice assessment without using notes. For every missed answer, write why the correct capability fits and why the alternatives do not. Revisit the relevant objective and explain it using a new example before repeating questions. Use Microsoft’s exam sandbox to learn navigation and review controls. Is a high practice score a guaranteed pass? No; familiarity with repeated items can disguise gaps. Is a lab mandatory for every fundamentals concept? No, but demonstrations and decision exercises make the vocabulary easier to retain. Confirm booking details and accommodations through the official credential page.
