Identity administration is a lifecycle discipline

The identity and access administrator decides how people, devices and applications obtain access, how that access is monitored and when it ends. SC-300 is a Microsoft Entra role assessment rather than a directory-navigation quiz. On 25 October 2026 its study guide already displays an upcoming 28 October outline. Select the version that applies to your examination date; a future outline should not silently become the current scope. Use the official certification page to confirm the live examination and renewal arrangements before booking.

Start with a joiner and a legitimate business need

Use a fictional organisation with employees, contractors and an application team. Write who creates an identity, which attributes establish department membership and who authorises access to finance records. Distinguish authentication from authorisation: proving who someone is does not establish which records they may read. In an authorised tenant, practise user and group administration and document the minimum administrative role needed for each task. Avoid using a global administrator account for every exercise because that hides permission-design mistakes.

Deploy access controls without creating a lockout

Plan a Conditional Access change for a small pilot group. Record the target resources, user conditions, authentication requirements, exclusions and recovery process. Use report-only evaluation where suitable and inspect sign-in results before enforcement. A worked failure case is a contractor who cannot complete the intended authentication method: investigate registration, policy applicability and the actual sign-in event before weakening the policy. Keep emergency-access procedures under controlled ownership and test them according to the organisation’s approved process.

Treat applications as identities too

An unattended integration needs to read a business dataset each night. Decide which workload identity is appropriate and which resource permission it needs; do not borrow an employee account simply because it works. Document consent, credential or federation arrangements, expiry monitoring and ownership. Add a failure scenario in which the integration owner leaves. The access design should remain supportable without retaining that person’s interactive account or allowing an unowned secret to persist indefinitely.

Make governance observable

Rehearse a contractor access review. Give the reviewer a business justification and an expiry expectation, then document the effect of retaining or removing access. Separate eligible administrative access from permanently assigned privilege, and explain how elevation is approved and recorded. For a leaver scenario, examine sessions, memberships, application assignments and workload dependencies rather than treating deletion as the whole process. Keep fabricated identities and sanitised evidence in your portfolio; real employee access records should stay within approved systems.

Prepare with evidence and answer the common questions

Build a skills matrix from the applicable SC-300 outline and attach one lab or written decision to each weak area. Practise reading sign-in and audit evidence and explaining why a policy produced a result. Is SC-900 required first? Fundamentals may help with vocabulary, but verify formal requirements on the SC-300 credential page instead of assuming a prerequisite. Does a practice-assessment score guarantee readiness? No: review each error, repeat the underlying task and use the exam sandbox to learn the interface. Success in the role means explaining and operating access decisions under normal and exceptional conditions.
