Understand the information security administrator’s scope

SC-401 concerns information protection, data loss prevention, retention and the management of information-security risks and alerts in Microsoft 365. The role works with governance owners, application administrators and incident responders; it does not independently determine every legal or employment decision. On 25 October 2026 the Microsoft guide already presents a 28 October update. Check which outline applies to your booked date and language, and treat future-dated objectives explicitly rather than presenting them as already effective.

Translate a requirement into a classification design

Use a fictional professional-services firm that handles customer contracts and payment data. Begin with the business definition of sensitive information, its approved uses and its owners. Compare available sensitive information types and classification approaches against realistic sample documents. Include a false positive, such as a harmless number that resembles an account identifier. Document precision problems before enabling broad automated enforcement. The administrator needs evidence that the selected detection method reflects the information requirement, rather than confidence based on a policy’s name.

Test protection and loss prevention separately

Create a demonstration label and a small, authorised test population. Explain the difference between publishing a label, applying it and enforcing its configured protection. Then define a DLP scenario such as sharing a sensitive customer file outside approved recipients. Use testing or simulation capabilities where available, examine the user’s experience and plan exceptions. Record what is allowed, warned about or blocked. A policy that prevents legitimate work without an accountable exception process is likely to produce workarounds and support incidents.

Handle insider risk as a governed investigation

Suppose an employee nearing the end of a contract downloads an unusually large volume of files. An alert is a reason to review context, not proof of wrongdoing. Establish the authorised reviewer, least-privilege access, privacy safeguards and escalation process before examining sensitive evidence. Compare the activity with job responsibilities and approved transfers. Keep factual observations separate from interpretations. Microsoft Purview insider risk management can support analysis, but disciplinary and legal conclusions require the organisation’s authorised processes and appropriate expertise.

Include retention and response in the design

A document may need protection while active and retention after its immediate business use ends. Discuss how the governance team establishes a retention requirement and how administrators implement and validate it. For an incident exercise, capture the alert, investigation steps, affected information and containment proposal. Coordinate with workload owners before changing access that could interrupt critical work. A good runbook states who can approve the action, what evidence must be preserved and when the incident is considered resolved.

Prepare through measurable administrative outcomes

Map the applicable SC-401 objectives to small projects: classification testing, label deployment, a DLP rollout and an insider-risk triage walkthrough. Use fabricated data and sanitised screenshots. Review each lab by asking what the requirement was, which settings implemented it and what observation proved the result. Is SC-401 mainly about monitoring employees? No: insider risk is one part of a wider information-security role. Does a certification authorise access to confidential case material? No: organisational permissions and policies still govern it. Use official practice resources and the exam sandbox, and verify current service licensing before committing to a lab or production design.
