The three renewal routes and the CPD commitment
For the credentials listed in its current renewal policy, PeopleCert describes three routes: pass the same examination again, pass another eligible certification within the same Product Suite, or use the CPD programme through PeopleCert Plus. The CPD route requires continuous qualifying membership and 20 CPD points in each of three consecutive years; it is not merely 60 points entered at the end.
For ITIL, current official FAQs state that the Product Suite includes all ITIL certifications, including the current Version 5 route alongside ITIL 4. PRINCE2 belongs to a different suite; obtaining a PRINCE2 qualification should not be assumed to renew an ITIL record. Check edition-specific inclusion rather than generalising the policy to every historic certificate.
Start from your certification record
Open your PeopleCert account and record each qualification, its edition and its renewal date. Applicable credentials have renewal requirements, but the rules should be checked for the exact qualification rather than inferred from the provider’s name alone.
The current renewal page describes a three-year cycle for listed certifications. It also explains that an unrenewed qualification can remain on verification services with an outdated status. That is different from assuming every historic credential vanishes from your record or remains current indefinitely.
Compare the available routes
PeopleCert describes renewal through its eligible CPD programme, passing another certification in the same Product Suite, or passing the same certification again. Check the current conditions and your qualification’s eligibility before committing to one route.
For the CPD route, the published approach uses PeopleCert Plus membership and annual reporting across three consecutive years. It is not simply a one-time purchase of a membership near the deadline. Build your plan around the actual recording requirements and the status shown in your account.
Respect the product-suite boundary
A Product Suite groups related certifications for renewal purposes. A new qualification in an eligible suite can renew other qualifications in that suite under the current rules. This should not be interpreted as a promise that any PeopleCert examination renews every credential you hold.
For example, do not assume that taking an unrelated project-management exam renews an ITIL qualification. Check the current suite grouping in PeopleCert’s official guidance and confirm an ambiguous combination with support. Similar labels or a shared training provider are not evidence of suite membership.
Keep development evidence throughout the cycle
Record learning or professional-development activities while they are fresh. Retain the date, duration or points claimed, relevant category and supporting evidence. Add a brief note explaining what you learned or improved. Follow the official CPD rules for qualifying activities and reporting.
Review the record periodically so a missing document or incorrect category can be resolved before the renewal deadline. Do not invent activity or duplicate claims to fill a gap. Renewal can be a useful professional-development routine when the activities connect to responsibilities you actually want to improve.
Verify the final outcome
After completing a route, check that the expected credentials and renewal dates have updated. Save the confirmation. If a result is missing, use the official support process with the relevant account and qualification details rather than assuming that another course purchase will fix it.
Before buying an exam or learning package through CertMatrix, confirm the exact qualification, version, voucher coverage and written terms. A related course may support development without itself completing renewal. The issuer determines the certification record and the effects of its product-suite rules.
Worked renewal register
Illustrative record: a professional holds an ITIL qualification and a PRINCE2 Project Management qualification, both approaching renewal. Give each a separate line with current date, Product Suite, selected route and supporting evidence. If the professional plans a new ITIL exam, record which ITIL qualifications the published rule covers; leave the PRINCE2 route unresolved until it has its own valid plan.
For CPD, keep annual subtotals rather than only a cycle total. A record showing 5 points in year one, 15 in year two and 40 in year three is not evidence that the stated 20-per-year condition has been met. Classify and evidence each activity using the programme’s actual rules, then review the account’s status.
Renewal FAQs
Is membership renewal identical to certification renewal? No; payment and qualifying activity are different matters. Does an unrenewed listed credential disappear? PeopleCert says verification records can instead show that it is outdated and needs renewal. Can I buy Plus just before expiry and assume the previous three years count? Do not assume retrospective eligibility; resolve your actual route and dates with PeopleCert.
