Make the version decision before buying

ITIL Foundation introduces a common language for managing technology-enabled value. ITIL 4 remains relevant to existing organisations and qualifications, while PeopleCert also offers ITIL Foundation Version 5. New candidates should compare the current version, employer expectations and intended progression before buying an exam or course. Do not assume every page labelled “ITIL Foundation” describes the same syllabus.

PeopleCert's current FAQ explains that ITIL 4 Foundation holders do not need to repeat Foundation simply to progress to higher-level Version 5 modules. A Foundation Bridge is another route for eligible holders who want to update that level. Check the actual eligibility and availability for your circumstances rather than buying both Foundation exams automatically.

Learn concepts through a service you understand

Use a familiar service such as employee onboarding, payroll or customer support. Identify users, customers, desired outcomes, costs and risks. Ask how the service creates value and where responsibilities are shared. This makes the terminology easier to understand than memorising a glossary in isolation.

Illustrative case: a new employee receives a laptop on time but cannot access the required applications. The request may be marked complete while the outcome is not achieved. Use the case to examine collaboration, hand-offs and measurement. It demonstrates why a service needs to be considered as a whole rather than as separate departmental tasks.

Keep ITIL 4 and Version 5 learning materials distinct

For ITIL 4, study the service value system, guiding principles, value chain, dimensions and relevant practices using the current syllabus. Version 5 expands the product-and-service perspective and its lifecycle model, with contemporary AI considerations. Do not mix question banks without checking which version's terminology and learning outcomes they assess.

Create one page comparing concepts you already know with new or changed concepts. Label the source and version on every practice set. If an answer explanation uses a different framework version, investigate the mismatch before concluding that your understanding is wrong. Old material can be useful background without being the correct exam reference.

Build a study plan around understanding and recall

Begin with the official syllabus and learning materials. Study a small topic, explain it without notes, then answer original or authorised practice questions. For each error, record the concept and why the alternative looked attractive. Repeated confusion between incident restoration and problem investigation needs targeted revision, not simply another full mock exam.

In a worked weekly plan, use three short sessions for concepts and one longer session to apply them to a service case. After completing the syllabus, add timed practice using the actual exam conditions. Treat this as an illustrative plan to adapt to your starting knowledge, not a promised number of weeks to pass.

Budget for the complete route

Compare quotations by country, currency, tax, exam version, training format and included resources. Check whether the package includes the official book, mock exam, retake option or membership, and whether each is necessary for your goal. A low headline price can exclude items that another package includes.

For a simple comparison, calculate total payable cost plus preparation time and any optional extras you actually intend to use. Verify expiry, rescheduling and refund terms before redemption. This article does not state a universal fee because regional pricing and bundles differ. A discounted voucher is useful only if its version, region and conditions match the intended booking.

Judge the career benefit realistically

Foundation can help service-desk staff, administrators, analysts and managers collaborate using shared concepts. It does not demonstrate mastery of every ITSM product, replace operational experience or guarantee a promotion. Pair the qualification with evidence of one improvement you can explain, such as reducing a request hand-off or defining a more useful service measure.

Common questions have practical answers: prior work experience can make examples easier, but check the specific product page for eligibility; a practice score is an indicator, not a pass guarantee; and the correct next module depends on the role you want to perform. Choose learning that improves your work rather than collecting every available designation.
