Choose the level for your current learning need

PRINCE2 Foundation establishes understanding of the method; Practitioner focuses on applying and tailoring it to a project context. Foundation is often the useful starting point for someone new to the method, while experienced project professionals should still check the accepted prerequisites for the Practitioner booking. These levels are not interchangeable evidence of practical experience.

PeopleCert's Version 7 Foundation page specifies a closed-book, multiple-choice examination with 60 questions, 60 minutes and a 60% pass requirement. Practitioner has a different, application-focused format. Confirm the current details, language and accommodation arrangements on the specific product page before booking.

Understand the seven principles through decisions

The principles concern continued business justification, learning from experience, defined roles and responsibilities, management by stages, management by exception, focus on products and tailoring to the project. Learn what decision each principle changes. Reciting the labels is less useful than recognising when a project has stopped following one.

Illustrative case: an organisation plans to replace a support platform. If the expected benefit disappears after a business change, continued justification should be reviewed. If the team starts building before agreeing what users will accept, product focus is weak. If every minor issue goes to the board, delegated authority and exception arrangements may need clarification.

Connect people, practices and processes

Use the same project to identify governance roles, management information and the sequence of decisions. Show how a business case, plan, risk, issue and quality decision relate to one another. Avoid treating the method as a collection of documents that must be made large to appear professional.

Write a short product description for a reporting dashboard. Define its purpose, users, quality criteria and acceptance approach. Then create a realistic change request that affects its scope. Ask who decides, what information is needed and whether an agreed tolerance would be exceeded. This turns abstract method knowledge into a coherent project discussion.

Prepare for Foundation with active recall

Map each official syllabus outcome to a concise explanation and an example. After studying a section, close the notes and explain it aloud. Use authorised or independently written practice questions, then review reasoning rather than memorising answer positions. A familiar question can inflate confidence without showing that you understand the concept.

For timed practice, use the conditions published for your own examination. Record whether errors arose from missing knowledge, misunderstood wording or poor pacing. Revisit the weak concept before repeating a full mock. Do not use recalled live questions or assume a guaranteed-pass offer provides legitimate preparation.

Prepare differently for Practitioner

Practitioner preparation requires applying the method to the scenario presented, not answering from your employer's preferred process. Practise finding relevant information, identifying roles and judging whether an action is appropriate in the described context. If permitted reference material is available, learn to navigate it without assuming there is time to read extensively during the exam.

Use the official Practitioner page and syllabus to confirm format, accepted prerequisites and permitted materials. Develop a case that changes across stages: a supplier delay, revised benefit, new risk or scope change. Explain which management product or decision should respond and why an attractive alternative would not address the issue.

Decide what the qualification adds to your career

PRINCE2 can provide a shared approach to project governance and controlled delivery. Its benefit depends on where the method is used and what responsibilities you hold. Foundation does not automatically make someone a project manager, and Practitioner does not replace leadership experience or knowledge of a specialist delivery domain.

Frequently asked questions should be answered against the exact version: check current renewal and booking rules rather than an old article; compare the full package and tax rather than the cheapest advertised number; and choose progression based on application needs. A strong next step is to document one project decision you can explain using the method, including what you tailored and why.
