What a VMware administrator actually owns
A VMware administrator keeps virtual infrastructure usable, secure and recoverable. Typical work includes provisioning virtual machines, monitoring host capacity, managing virtual networking and storage connections, arranging maintenance, and investigating incidents. The boundaries depend on the organisation: a small team may own backup operations, while a larger enterprise separates storage, network and platform responsibilities.
Build a responsibility map before choosing training. Record which services you support, who approves changes, and when you must escalate. Being able to create a virtual machine is useful; understanding its application dependencies, recovery requirements and maintenance constraints makes the administrator dependable during an outage.
Understand VCP-DCV and the current certification landscape
Broadcom still describes VCP-DCV around implementing, managing and troubleshooting vSphere 8.x. The familiar 2V0-21.23 reference belongs to that vSphere generation. Its presence in an older article does not establish that it is the best examination for a new learner or that an old booking instruction remains accurate.
The current portfolio also includes VMware vSphere Foundation Administrator and VMware Cloud Foundation Administrator. Compare the exact credential page and exam guide with your employer’s deployed platform. VVF-oriented operations and a complete VCF private-cloud role overlap, but they are not identical scopes. Confirm availability through the issuer’s registration workflow before purchasing preparation or a voucher.
Build competence across compute, storage and networking
For compute, practise resource allocation, host maintenance and the consequences of contention. For storage, explain how a virtual machine reaches its datastore and what a capacity or connectivity problem looks like. For networking, trace traffic from a guest adapter through its virtual switch and onward to the physical network.
Add identity, permissions, lifecycle management and recovery to the same notebook. Capture a baseline, make one controlled lab change, observe the result, and reverse it. Explain why the action was appropriate and what evidence would show success. Follow the supported procedure for the product version in your lab.
A realistic incident case
Consider a fictional payroll application that becomes slow after several new virtual machines are deployed. Do not immediately increase every virtual CPU allocation. Establish the affected time window, inspect guest and infrastructure metrics, compare storage latency and CPU contention, and ask whether a backup or batch job ran at the same time.
Write a short incident record with symptoms, evidence, competing hypotheses, the chosen intervention and validation. If moving a workload improves performance, document what changed and what remains uncertain. This exercise develops troubleshooting judgement and creates a stronger interview example than repeating a list of console features.
Prepare for the exam with demonstrable outputs
Use the current official blueprint as a checklist. For each objective, produce either a lab record, an architecture explanation or an error investigation. Start with a diagnostic session so familiar topics receive less time and weak dependencies receive more. A calendar should reflect your existing experience rather than a promised universal completion time.
Finish with timed, legitimate practice and an error log. Separate mistakes caused by terminology, incomplete product understanding and poor scenario reading. Reproduce the underlying task after reviewing an answer. Check identification, delivery options, accommodations and booking rules directly before scheduling.
Assess career value and salary claims
Certification is most useful when a target role actually runs the relevant VMware platform and you can demonstrate operational experience. A help-desk technician may first need networking, server and troubleshooting foundations; an experienced administrator may benefit from validating a newly adopted platform or moving toward architecture.
Do not treat a single worldwide salary figure as a prediction. Compare local vacancies by responsibility, seniority, on-call expectations and industry. Ask whether employers require or merely prefer the credential. A credible career plan combines the certificate with evidence of recovery tests, safe changes and well-documented investigations; passing an exam alone does not guarantee a job or raise.
