Update the route before using an old course

AZ-800 and AZ-801 retired on 30 September 2026. As of this article’s 25 October review, Microsoft’s Windows Server Administrator Associate page points to AZ-802: Administering Windows Server. Older AZ-800 core-infrastructure and AZ-801 advanced-services resources remain useful for selected skills, but they are not current booking instructions. Start with the AZ-802 study guide and map each older lesson to its actual objective. Check your own transcript for previously earned credentials rather than assuming that one retired examination automatically constitutes the complete certification.

Build a bounded server lab

Create an isolated, authorised lab with a domain controller, a member server and a client, using fictional accounts and a documented network. Record name resolution, addressing, administrative access and the recovery method before adding services. Practise AD DS, Group Policy, virtual machines, networking, storage and monitoring as connected operations. PowerShell is useful for repeatable inspection and configuration; Windows Admin Center provides another administration surface. Learn what a tool changes and how to verify it, rather than collecting screenshots of consoles.

Separate availability from recovery

Consider a small organisation whose file service must survive a host failure and whose finance data must be recoverable after accidental deletion. Availability concerns continued service; disaster recovery concerns restoring acceptable service and data after disruption. Define a recovery time objective and recovery point objective in business language before selecting technology. A replicated mistake can reach another copy, so replication alone is not an adequate answer to every recovery requirement. Explain the failure each control addresses and the dependency it still leaves exposed.

Run a restore exercise with measured evidence

Use disposable data to simulate a deleted file or failed server. Establish which backup is usable, which permissions are required and where the recovery will occur. Restore into a safe target, validate content and access, then record elapsed time and the amount of data that would be lost. Compare these observations with the agreed objectives. Do not claim a recovery design works because a backup job reports success: the organisation needs a tested path from a damaged service to verified business use.

Administer hybrid services deliberately

AZ-802 names technologies including Azure Arc, Azure Monitor, Azure Update Manager and Defender for Cloud. For each lab integration, identify the server connection, permissions, data sent and operational owner. Test monitoring with a controlled event and confirm who receives the alert. For updates, define maintenance windows, a pilot group and rollback expectations. A useful incident exercise is a server that appears healthy locally but has stopped reporting centrally; investigate connectivity and agent state before assuming the workload has failed.

Use a study sequence and a practical readiness review

Spend an initial phase on identity and networking, then virtualisation and storage, and finally security, monitoring and fault recovery. Advance when you can explain and reproduce the task, not after a fixed number of videos. Former AZ-801 candidates should preserve their security and recovery practice while filling the broader AZ-802 gaps. Former AZ-800 candidates should add advanced operational reasoning instead of treating familiar identity topics as sufficient. Before booking, confirm the live guide, regional scheduling and any credential requirements directly with Microsoft. A credible portfolio contains a runbook, a failed test, its diagnosis and a successful retest.
