Compare the actual programmes, not “agile versus waterfall”

PMP is not a waterfall-only credential: its current outline includes predictive, adaptive/agile and hybrid situations. Scrum.org PSM I specifically assesses Scrum understanding and Scrum Master accountabilities. PSM I currently has 80 questions, 60 minutes and an 85% pass threshold; course attendance is not required to attempt it. PMP has a separate experience-based application process.

PSM I is a lifetime certification without an annual renewal fee under Scrum.org’s published terms. PMP has a continuing-certification cycle. These facts apply to the named programmes; they should not be transferred to another Scrum issuer or to an advanced assessment merely because it contains “Scrum Master” in the title.

Replace the either-or question with a role question

PMP and a Scrum credential do not measure exactly the same thing. PMP addresses project leadership across different approaches. Scrum-specific credentials focus on understanding Scrum and, depending on the assessment, a particular accountability or advanced application. Decide what you need to do at work before comparing badge names.

For example, coordinating a project across contracts and multiple delivery teams can create different learning needs from helping one Scrum Team work more effectively. Neither example makes one credential universally superior; it makes the context important.

Choose the exact Scrum credential

“Scrum certification” is not one product. Identify the awarding organisation, assessment level and intended accountability. A Scrum Master pathway and a Product Owner pathway have different emphasis, and different organisations can use different training or renewal requirements.

Scrum.org, for example, permits learners to attempt its Professional Scrum assessments without attending a class. That rule should not be applied to every Scrum-related credential. Check the exact official assessment page before buying a course or assuming attendance alone earns certification.

Compare eligibility before preparation

For PMP, review the current education and professional-experience requirements. For the chosen Scrum credential, review its specific prerequisites, recommended experience and assessment conditions. “No mandatory class” does not mean that professional understanding can be developed without study or practice.

Make a gap list for the intended work. You may need broader delivery judgement, a clearer understanding of Scrum, facilitation practice or product-value decisions. The most useful next course is the one that addresses that gap with an appropriate level of challenge.

Use practice that fits the learning goal

For Scrum study, start with the current Scrum Guide and practise explaining accountabilities, events and artefacts in context. Use free Open Assessments as diagnostic learning tools, while recognising that they do not award a certification or establish the difficulty of a professional assessment.

For PMP, map preparation to the current examination outline and use scenario reasoning across the relevant approaches. In both cases, review uncertain answers and explain alternatives. Memorising repeated questions can hide gaps in your ability to apply the underlying concepts.

Choose a sequence you can justify

If both pathways serve your work, take them in a sequence that respects your experience, eligibility and available time. Do not assume that completing one automatically satisfies all requirements for another, or that holding both guarantees a role or promotion.

Check exam fees, training scope and maintenance terms separately. CertMatrix can discuss relevant preparation options, but should not imply a partnership, issuer endorsement or guaranteed result. Your final choice should connect a credible learning activity to a real responsibility you want to perform better.

Use dimensions that affect your working day

For scope of work, compare coordinating project outcomes with improving the effectiveness of a Scrum Team. For responsibilities, compare project leadership across stakeholders and delivery approaches with Scrum-specific facilitation, coaching and accountabilities. For preparation, compare a broad examination outline with deeper understanding of one framework. For maintenance, compare each issuer’s actual continuing requirements.

Example: a delivery lead managing procurement, governance and dependencies across several teams may prioritise PMP-related development. A team member helping people understand Sprint Goals, inspect progress and address impediments may prioritise Scrum learning. A person doing both jobs may benefit from both, but the learning sequence should follow the immediate gap rather than the longest package on sale.

Scrum pathway FAQs

Is passing Scrum Open the same as PSM I? No; Open Assessments are free learning diagnostics and do not award certification. Does a certificate make someone effective at facilitation? It provides assessment evidence, not a substitute for practice. Can I copy exam answers into a shared study bank? Follow the issuer’s conduct rules and use authorised resources.
