The requirements are more than a total of 60

PMI currently requires PMP holders to earn 60 professional development units within a three-year cycle. The allocation matters: at least 35 must be Education PDUs, and no more than 25 may come from Giving Back. Education must include at least eight PDUs in each Talent Triangle area: Ways of Working, Power Skills and Business Acumen.

The three eight-PDU minimums total 24. Within the 35-Education minimum, at least another 11 Education PDUs can therefore be allocated across the Triangle areas. Giving Back is optional: earning all 60 through eligible Education is a valid planning approach. A total of 60 does not solve a missing minimum in one skill area.

Choose activities that fit the category

Ways of Working concerns approaches, methods and techniques for getting work done. Power Skills concerns capabilities such as communication and leadership. Business Acumen concerns understanding the organisational context and how work contributes to value. Classify the actual learning content, not merely the course title.

For example, a webinar on negotiating a stakeholder disagreement could include Power Skills learning, while a session on evaluating project investment could support Business Acumen. A mixed course may cover more than one area; allocate the relevant time rather than placing the full duration into every category. Use the provider’s valid breakdown where supplied and retain evidence.

Worked example: a simple education-only plan

Illustrative allocation: 20 eligible Education PDUs in Ways of Working, 20 in Power Skills and 20 in Business Acumen. This totals 60 and exceeds each eight-PDU minimum, without needing Giving Back. It is an arithmetic example, not a pre-approved list of courses or a requirement to divide learning equally.

Contrast that with 40 Education PDUs all allocated to Ways of Working plus 20 Giving Back. Although the total is 60 and the education total exceeds 35, the Power Skills and Business Acumen minimums are missing. Review both the total and the category distribution before assuming the cycle is complete.

Keep a record that supports the claim

For each activity, record the date, title, provider or organiser, duration, relevant category, amount claimed and evidence location. Add a short note on the learning outcome. Keep certificates, agendas or other suitable evidence according to PMI’s retention and reporting rules; a saved payment receipt alone may not explain what was learned.

Use the Continuing Certification Renewal System to report activity and monitor the authoritative totals. Record the claim status, not just your own intended count. If an activity is unclear, resolve the category or eligibility question before relying on it to close the cycle. Do not report identical hours twice or inflate a claim to reach a target.

A routine that avoids the final-month scramble

At the beginning of the cycle, note its exact dates and identify development priorities from your work. Review progress every quarter. Compare Education, Giving Back and all three Triangle subtotals. Use the gap to choose meaningful learning rather than collecting unrelated completion certificates near expiry.

After earning and reporting the required PDUs, follow PMI’s renewal and fee process. PMI membership and certification renewal are different transactions. A membership payment, a course purchase or a training provider’s reminder does not establish that your credential has renewed. Confirm the updated certification record and retain the confirmation.

Renewal FAQs

Can I earn all my PDUs through Education? Yes, eligible Education can exceed the minimum; Giving Back is not compulsory. Does normal paid project work automatically supply unlimited PDUs? No; category rules and applicable caps still govern claims. Do training hours used before earning PMP automatically become renewal PDUs? Do not assume so; the activity must fit the current cycle and CCR requirements.

Can CertMatrix renew the credential for me? The issuer controls certification status. CertMatrix can discuss relevant learning support with clearly described scope, but you remain responsible for accurate claims, account actions and professional obligations. Use your current PMI record to resolve a deadline, suspension or unusual cycle situation rather than applying a generic article’s assumption.
