Separate the framework from assessor training

The Smart Industry Readiness Index, or SIRI, provides an Industry 4.0 maturity framework for manufacturing. INCIT describes three building blocks, eight pillars and sixteen dimensions. TÜV SÜD offers assessor training and certification preparation for professionals who want to conduct official assessments. Training attendance and authorisation as a certified assessor are separate outcomes.

Verify the current certification scheme, prerequisites and assessment requirements before enrolling. Do not assume that a course title alone permits you to issue official assessments. The professional role requires consistent evidence interpretation, manufacturing context and the ability to communicate findings without turning the assessment into a sales presentation.

Understand the whole manufacturing system

SIRI considers process, technology and organisation rather than only automation equipment. A factory can own advanced machinery while struggling with disconnected planning data, unclear responsibilities or insufficient workforce learning. The useful question is how capabilities work together in the facility’s current state.

Use an illustrative manufacturer with automated production cells but manual scheduling and delayed quality feedback. Draw the flow of material, information and decisions. Ask which gaps affect delivery, quality and cost. This makes the assessment relevant to operational outcomes instead of treating a modern-looking shopfloor as proof of overall maturity.

Collect evidence before assigning maturity

Prepare a scope, stakeholder list and evidence plan. Combine interviews, documentation and direct observation where appropriate. Distinguish an implemented capability from a planned investment or a demonstration that is not used in ordinary operation. Record uncertainty and conflicting evidence rather than forcing a confident score.

In the illustrative factory, a manager may report integrated scheduling while operators still rely on printed changes. Investigate the difference respectfully. Ask when the information is updated, who uses it and what happens during exceptions. The assessor’s value lies in a defensible baseline, not in confirming the most optimistic account.

Link priorities with business objectives

A maturity profile is an input to prioritisation, not a command to maximise every dimension. INCIT’s framework connects present state, business impact, objectives and broader reference information. The practical aim is to identify improvements that matter for this facility.

For the manufacturer, improving quality feedback might be more valuable than adding another automated cell. Explain the expected benefit, dependency, owner and evidence required to evaluate progress. Avoid presenting an industry benchmark as a universal target without considering the business model and constraints.

Develop assessor judgement and global relevance

A common framework can help teams compare capabilities across sites and regions, but consistent labels do not eliminate differences in operating context. Assessors need to understand sector-specific processes and explain how evidence supports the selected interpretation. A certification does not make one person an expert in every manufacturing industry.

Practise a short assessment case with peers and compare the reasons behind different judgements. Focus on where evidence is missing or terms are interpreted differently. Explain findings to both an engineering audience and leadership, maintaining the same factual basis while adjusting the level of detail.

Prepare a roadmap and an honest career case

Create a final report containing the baseline, evidence rationale, selected priorities, dependencies and review measures. Separate assessment findings from implementation proposals and disclose relevant limitations. Transformation requires ownership and follow-through after the assessment meeting.

For career planning, review work involving manufacturing improvement, digital transformation and advisory services. SIRI assessor preparation can strengthen structured assessment skills, but business success depends on experience, credibility and delivery. Confirm current TÜV SÜD and INCIT requirements before presenting a qualification publicly, and use the precise title actually awarded.
