Choose the development scope first

Salesforce developer credentials cover related but distinct capabilities. Older titles may refer to Platform Developer I or JavaScript Developer I; use the current catalogue and individual guide for the name, assessment components and prerequisites. Platform Developer II addresses deeper platform development rather than simply more syntax questions.

A useful career plan separates platform data and execution behaviour from general JavaScript language knowledge and user-interface work. You may need all three in a role, but study should reflect the gaps you can demonstrate. A credential does not by itself establish independent production experience.

Build a platform feature with a business rule

Create a small training feature that updates related request records after an approved status change. Define the requirement and the expected behaviour when several records change together. Decide whether declarative automation or code is appropriate before writing Apex.

Use a dedicated learning environment and invented data. Explain transaction boundaries, sharing assumptions and how errors should be communicated. A feature that works only for one record under a privileged account is insufficient evidence of a dependable platform implementation.

Prepare advanced Apex through failure cases

For Platform Developer II development, practise collection-based processing, asynchronous choices, integration behaviour and maintainable tests against the current guide. Test multiple records, missing relationships, denied access and a downstream failure. Explain why the implementation remains correct under those conditions.

Review the code as if another developer will maintain it. Separate concerns, avoid unnecessary database work and document meaningful assumptions. Use tests that assert business behaviour and negative cases rather than merely executing lines. Verify the programme’s current assessment components instead of relying on an old exam-only description.

Develop JavaScript knowledge independently

For the JavaScript topic, practise values, scope, functions, objects, modules, asynchronous behaviour and error handling. Build a small interface using a mock service and deliberately vary response order or failure. Explain which promise resolves when and what the user sees.

Do not assume that using a framework eliminates the need to understand the language. Likewise, general JavaScript ability does not automatically establish Salesforce security or data-model expertise. Map the official current guide to exercises and verify whether additional practical components apply to the credential you intend to earn.

Connect user interface, platform and security

Create a simple interface that requests records and displays a permitted action. Validate on the server as well as in the browser. A hidden button or disabled input is not an access-control boundary, and a successful administrator test does not establish ordinary-user correctness.

Write a test record for two users with different access. Check data returned, actions allowed and error messages. Keep sensitive implementation details out of user-facing errors while ensuring authorised support staff can diagnose a failure through appropriate logs.

Present a credible developer portfolio

Include a short requirement, design decision, implementation overview and tests covering both success and failure. Explain one alternative you rejected and why. Use sanitised material and avoid publishing proprietary code or customer data as evidence of experience.

Before booking, verify current prerequisites, assessment components, delivery and maintenance requirements. Build a study schedule from actual weak areas and use legitimate preparation. For career progression, seek review and increasingly responsible work: a passed assessment can support that development, while the quality of your decisions demonstrates it.
