Use the correct retirement date
As checked on 25 October 2026, Microsoft lists the Microsoft 365 Administrator Expert credential and MS-102 exam for retirement on 30 November 2026. An October deadline in an older article is not the current official date. AB-650, Administering Microsoft 365 and AI Services, reflects a role that includes AI services. Check the live pages before booking because schedules and credential requirements can change.
Decide whether to finish the existing route
If you are already close to MS-102 readiness, compare the remaining work, prerequisite credential requirements, appointment availability and your employer’s goal before deciding. A passing exam and an awarded expert credential are not necessarily the same event. If starting now, evaluate the current AI-services administration route rather than rushing an unfamiliar exam to preserve an old title. Do not assume one code automatically upgrades or transfers to another.
Build a tenant administration baseline
For a suggested practice organisation, document domains, users, groups, licences, collaboration workloads and service-health ownership. Create a joiner-mover-leaver scenario using fictional users. Explain who authorises access and how unnecessary entitlements are removed. Use least-privilege roles and an authorised lab. The point is to demonstrate controlled tenant operations, not collect screenshots produced with a Global Administrator account.
Add AI governance to the same operating model
The AB-650 guide explicitly includes governing workloads and managing AI services. Use a narrow Copilot or agent adoption case: identify the intended users, accessible content, information protection needs, licence assumptions and support owner. Test the difference between a feature being enabled and a user being entitled to use it. Ask whether overshared content could become easier to discover before celebrating improved retrieval.
Connect identity, security and compliance
Create a small incident scenario involving a suspicious sign-in or an incorrectly shared file. Describe which identity, threat-protection and information-governance teams should act, and which evidence supports the decision. Product integration does not remove responsibilities between those teams. In preparation, map each current objective to a lab result or a written operational explanation; use current official assessment links rather than treating an older MS-102 score as proof of AB-650 readiness.
Keep the credential and the career claim separate
Broad Microsoft 365 skills remain useful to internal IT teams and partners, but partner programme recognition and job value have their own requirements. Verify them directly rather than promising a certification will create a job or designation. Existing holders should follow their transcript’s status and any retirement-related renewal limits. Your strongest reusable asset is a tenant runbook showing controlled provisioning, incident investigation, data protection and a realistic AI adoption process.
Investigate a tenant-wide change safely
A proposed security policy could affect every employee. Define a pilot group, emergency access arrangements, support communications and rollback criteria before enforcement. Use the available reporting or simulation mode where appropriate, then review actual impact with workload owners. A Microsoft 365 administrator must connect identity, licensing, endpoint and collaboration dependencies. Your project notes should explain who approves the change and how you establish that users can still complete critical work after it.
