Identify which credential needs renewal
Microsoft distinguishes fundamentals certifications from eligible associate, expert and specialty certifications. Fundamentals do not expire. Eligible role-based and specialty credentials use a free online renewal assessment on Microsoft Learn. Do not buy an examination or course simply because another holder says that is how every Microsoft credential renews.
Sign in to the Learn profile associated with the credential. Open your profile’s certification area, inspect the credential and its expiry, and look for its renewal action when eligible. Account access matters: finding an old certificate PDF is not the same as having access to the profile that owns the credential.
Understand the window and the outcome
The standard renewal eligibility window opens six months before expiry. Passing extends the credential for one year from its existing expiration date, so renewing early does not normally sacrifice the remaining months. Microsoft’s renewal FAQ notes that expiration dates and times use UTC.
For example, if a credential expires late in the year, make a renewal plan when the eligibility window opens rather than waiting for the last local evening. Use the actual date shown in your profile and leave time for technical problems or another assessment attempt. Do not rely on a reminder message arriving at a convenient time.
Prepare for changed skills, not the original exam again
The renewal assessment focuses on relevant updates and is shorter than the original certification exam. It is unproctored and open book, but that does not make it an automatic administrative formality. Use the learning collection linked from the credential’s renewal page to identify changed capabilities and unfamiliar objectives.
Create a three-column note: new or changed capability, what it means for the role, and a scenario where it matters. If you administer Azure, connect a changed feature to an access, storage, compute or operational decision. Reading the exact same old preparation notes may miss the reason the assessment exists.
Take the assessment in your own account
Follow the renewal action from the correct Learn profile. Complete the assessment yourself and follow its instructions. Open-book status should not be interpreted as permission to share account credentials or have someone else answer on your behalf.
If an attempt is unsuccessful, use the feedback to select the next learning activity. Microsoft’s current FAQ permits an immediate retry after the first unsuccessful attempt, then requires at least a 24-hour interval after the second attempt before subsequent tries. Every successful completion still needs to occur before expiry.
If the renewal action is missing
First verify the account, credential identity, expiry and whether the six-month window has opened. A credential that is not subject to renewal will not follow the same process. An expired credential also should not be assumed to retain the normal renewal route.
If the profile appears inconsistent, use Microsoft Credentials Support with the relevant certification details. Do not create unrelated profiles or pay another company to “activate” an assessment without understanding the actual account issue. A third-party preparation provider cannot alter the issuer’s eligibility window.
Verify the updated record and maintain a calendar
After passing, confirm that the updated expiry appears in the official profile. Keep your completion confirmation and note the next review date. If the displayed outcome differs from what you expect, preserve the relevant details and contact support.
Track each renewable credential separately, including its official renewal link. A paid course may be helpful optional preparation, but it is not a mandatory Microsoft renewal fee. Keep certification renewal separate from training subscriptions, examination purchases and any employer reimbursement process.
Practical questions answered
Does passing early change my remaining validity? Microsoft describes renewal as extending the credential from its existing expiry, not replacing the remaining months with a new cycle starting on assessment day. This is why beginning when eligible is generally more practical than delaying until the final days of the window.
Is a paid renewal course compulsory? The issuer’s renewal assessment is free for eligible certifications. A course may be optional preparation, but do not confuse its commercial price with a mandatory assessment fee. Decide whether you need that support based on your knowledge gaps and the course’s actual scope.
