Choose a level from the tasks, not the number

Linux Essentials introduces Linux and open-source fundamentals. LPIC-1 validates junior administration tasks, while LPIC-2 extends into more advanced administration and engineering. Compare your current ability with each official objective set before choosing the next route.

Linux Essentials is in a version transition: the current official page lists version 2.0 with 010-200 and identifies the earlier 010-160 route as available until April 2027. Verify the version and language you book; historical 010-160 material should be checked against the appropriate objectives.

Build a safe command-line foundation

Use a disposable virtual machine or other authorised lab. Practise navigating directories, reading help, working with files, managing permissions and interpreting process information. Know what a command does before running it with elevated privileges.

For an exercise, create a small project directory, assign appropriate access and explain which user can read or modify each file. Keep a snapshot or a rebuild procedure. Do not practise destructive commands on your normal working environment or on data you cannot recover.

For LPIC-1, connect separate administration tasks

LPIC-1 requires two exams under the active programme. Match your materials to the current 101 and 102 objectives rather than assuming every older course is complete. Practise installation, package management, filesystems, services and basic networking as connected tasks.

An illustrative case is a service that does not start after a configuration change. Inspect service status and logs, validate the configuration and check permissions before reinstalling the application. Record the cause and verify that the service survives a controlled restart.

For LPIC-2, deepen the troubleshooting model

LPIC-2 requires an active LPIC-1 certification for the award. Review the current 201 and 202 objectives and the issuer’s exam-validity rules. Advanced preparation should include reasoning about multiple services and dependencies, not only recalling additional command flags.

Build a fictional service path involving a client, name resolution, network access and a server process. Identify which evidence distinguishes a DNS issue from a listening-service or firewall issue. Change one variable at a time so that the result is interpretable.

Use free official learning with deliberate practice

LPI provides learning material aligned with its objectives. Use it alongside direct practice and local manual pages. After a lesson, repeat the task without copying the command sequence, then explain the expected output and a likely failure condition.

Keep a task log showing the objective, command or configuration, validation and recovery. This becomes evidence of your learning without claiming professional experience you do not have. Use non-sensitive sample files and avoid publishing credentials or real server information.

Plan the certification route sustainably

Confirm exam version, delivery mode, identification and local price through LPI and its testing provider. Check the validity and prerequisite rules for the award you want; passing an individual examination is not always the whole certification process.

Which level is best for a job? Match the assessed tasks to the role. A beginner can benefit from fundamentals, while an administrator may need LPIC-1 or LPIC-2 depth. No certificate guarantees a Linux position; practical troubleshooting and careful system changes remain essential.
