Decide whether AI risk is the skill you need
GARP's Risk and AI Certificate addresses AI methods, their business use, associated risks and responsible governance. It is useful for professionals who must challenge an AI proposal, evaluate its controls or communicate uncertainty. It does not establish that the holder can build every type of model, provide legal advice or independently approve a regulated deployment.
Consider an illustrative lending-support model. A useful risk discussion asks whether training data represents the intended population, how errors affect applicants, who can override an output and how changes are monitored. Memorising model names cannot answer those questions. Before enrolling, identify one AI-related decision in your work that you want to evaluate more carefully.
Choose a future window using the live logistics page
As checked on 25 October 2026, the October 2026 sitting has finished. GARP lists the next April window as 3–11 April 2027, with registration opening on 1 December 2026. This matters when an older article tells readers to register for an October 2026 appointment: the dates must be checked again rather than followed as an evergreen instruction.
The published programme uses an 80-question, four-hour multiple-choice assessment. Confirm the current format, language and delivery options for your chosen sitting. Start a calendar containing registration, appointment scheduling, identification checks and preparation milestones. Keep GARP's stated deadline time zone attached to each deadline instead of treating a displayed date as midnight in India.
Register first, then secure the actual appointment
Use the official GARP programme account and review the current window, price, tax, included learning access and cancellation or retake terms before paying. Enter your legal name consistently with the identification you will present. A successful programme payment and a confirmed test appointment are separate records; retain both confirmations.
Follow the scheduling route provided for your registration and choose an available test centre or supported remote appointment. Check accessibility arrangements before selecting a date. For remote delivery, perform the programme's current system test on the intended computer and network. If the portal does not show an appointment, resolve that discrepancy through official support rather than assuming the payment email reserves a seat.
Turn the official curriculum into a risk workbook
Use GARP Learning and the official practice resources as the syllabus baseline. For each area, write an explanation in your own words, a business example and a failure condition. A practical workbook might connect data provenance to reliability, model evaluation to decision consequences, and governance to named approval and monitoring responsibilities.
For a fictional customer-service assistant, compare three risks: returning unsupported policy statements, disclosing restricted documents and continuing to use outdated source material. Define a separate test and response for each. This prevents vague answers such as 'improve the AI' from replacing a control that can be implemented and evaluated.
Use practice results to change the study plan
Work through official practice material without first looking at explanations. Classify mistakes by concept, scenario interpretation or timing. If you choose a technically attractive option that fails to address the stated business risk, rewrite the decision question and explain why the alternative control is more relevant. Do not collect recalled live examination questions from forums.
Reserve later sessions for mixed scenarios and timed work, while keeping time for reviewing the reasoning. GARP provides a preparation-time expectation, but your diagnostic should determine the actual schedule. Someone who can repeat terminology but cannot distinguish a model limitation from a governance failure needs more applied practice before the appointment.
Common planning questions
Does registration guarantee a preferred appointment? No: inspect scheduling availability and retain the separate confirmation. Is the certificate a guaranteed route to an AI job or salary increase? No: compare the learning with real role requirements and show an anonymised risk analysis alongside the credential.
What happens after the exam? Use the current candidate portal and programme guidance for results and any next step. Continue reviewing AI practice after passing; the usefulness of an AI risk credential depends on keeping knowledge current as systems and governance expectations change. Your next practical deliverable can be a one-page AI risk assessment with explicit evidence gaps and accountable owners.
