What changed for candidates
Microsoft lists the Dynamics 365 Field Service Functional Consultant Associate credential as retired on 30 June 2026. That changes the certification route, not the need to plan and support field operations. New learners should stop treating MB-240 as a bookable target and use the current catalogue when selecting a credential. Existing holders should describe their transcript status and expiry accurately.
Follow a service visit from request to completion
A useful practice case is a maintenance visit for a fictional customer asset. Define the work order, required skill, parts, location and promised service window. Follow creation, scheduling, technician activity and completion in an authorised learning environment. At each stage identify the record owner and the evidence needed by the next person. This makes the day-to-day consultant role concrete: it connects dispatch, technicians, stock and customer service.
Treat scheduling as a constrained decision
Compare two technicians with different skills, availability and travel assumptions. Explain why the nearest person is not necessarily the eligible or best resource. Change the visit duration and ask how it affects later commitments. A suggested test matrix includes an unavailable resource, missing qualification and a customer cancellation. The objective is to diagnose a failed booking rather than manually force the schedule to look complete.
Practise mobile and inventory exceptions
For mobile work, document which information the technician needs at the site, what may be updated and what happens when connectivity is poor. For parts, distinguish a reserved item from one consumed on the job. Test an incorrect serial number and a part that is not available. Do not use customer devices or live stock records as unrestricted learning tools. A sandbox and fictional assets allow mistakes without creating operational confusion.
Use legacy material intelligently
The historical MB-240 guide is a useful index of Field Service capabilities, including work orders, assets, scheduling, mobile and inventory. Compare its exercises with the current product documentation and interface. Remove outdated exam logistics from your plan. Choose current Applied Skills or certifications only after reading their exact requirements; none should be presented as a direct MB-240 replacement merely because it mentions Dynamics 365.
Build evidence that survives the badge
Publish a portfolio case containing requirements, a work-order lifecycle, booking decisions, exception tests and a technician handover note. Explain one tradeoff, such as appointment flexibility versus predictable routing. Make no claims about guaranteed employment, salary or service savings. If you already hold the retired credential, preserve the transcript record and pair it with recent product practice. The practical next step is demonstrable field-service competence rather than purchasing an unavailable exam.
Test an incomplete service visit
A technician reaches a site but lacks a replacement component. Rehearse how the work order records the visit, how parts are reserved or requested, and how a follow-up booking affects the customer promise. Check what the dispatcher can see without relying on a phone call. Your demonstration should distinguish booked time, actual work and the final financial outcome. For portfolio purposes, use a fictional customer and show how the exception is resolved rather than presenting only an ideal first-time fix.
