First distinguish failure from a delivery incident
An unsuccessful result calls for a preparation review. A cancelled, interrupted or disputed appointment may also require a support case. Save the official result, appointment details and factual incident records before purchasing another attempt. Do not include confidential examination questions in your notes or complaint.
A retake purchase and an appeal are separate decisions. Ask the issuer or testing provider how the recorded outcome affects eligibility and fees. A training company cannot override the issuer’s attempt limit or approve an exception on the issuer’s behalf.
Microsoft and Cisco use different waiting rules
For Microsoft role-based, specialty and fundamentals exams, the first unsuccessful attempt normally requires a 24-hour wait; later unsuccessful attempts require 14 days. The policy limits attempts to five in a 12-month period. Other assessment families have their own rules.
Cisco’s policy for entry, associate, professional, specialist and CCDE written examinations requires five calendar days after failure, beginning the day after the attempt. Expert practical examinations have separate provisions. Record the exact programme and attempt history instead of transferring a waiting rule from another issuer.
ISACA and PMP: track the eligibility window
The ISACA candidate guide covering CISA, CISM, CRISC, CGEIT and CDPSE permits four attempts in a rolling 12 months. It specifies 30 days before the second attempt, then 90 days after each of the next unsuccessful attempts. Each attempt requires payment.
PMI’s PMP information permits up to three attempts within the one-year eligibility period. Check your account for the actual expiry and current reapplication rules. A study schedule that ignores the remaining eligibility window can leave too little time to use another permitted attempt.
CompTIA: confirm the programme and purchased entitlement
For CompTIA, use the current issuer policy reached through the official programme and Pearson VUE pages. Confirm the exact examination, number of previous unsuccessful attempts and earliest permitted date in your account before paying. This guide does not supply an unverified CompTIA waiting interval.
Read your order confirmation to distinguish an ordinary exam voucher from a bundle that includes a retake. Record the exam code, validity, territory and redemption conditions. A course advertised with retake support may provide additional teaching rather than another paid examination.
PeopleCert: check whether Take2 was purchased
PeopleCert Take2 is a specific resit product. The current terms allow purchase up to 15 minutes before the initial exam and require the resit within six months of that initial date. It cannot simply be added after discovering an unsuccessful result.
Check the original purchase and current terms for your product. Keep resit validity separate from course access and any wider certification renewal obligation. If no resit entitlement exists, ask for the ordinary next-attempt price and applicable scheduling conditions.
Diagnose the result and change the preparation
Make an error log with three types of gap: knowledge, application and examination technique. For each weak objective, choose a new activity. Explain a concept without notes, perform a task in a lab or compare plausible decisions under a different scenario.
For example, a learner who repeatedly chooses a technical control before identifying the business risk should practise explaining the decision sequence. More repetitions of a familiar question may increase recall without improving the judgement being tested.
Choose the next date after a readiness review
Complete a fresh authorised practice exercise, review the reasoning behind errors and demonstrate the important practical skills. Add any approved accommodation and technical setup steps to the plan. Treat the policy waiting period as the earliest possible date, not evidence that preparation is complete.
Write down the next-attempt cost, permitted date, eligibility expiry and remaining learning tasks. Book when those conditions align. A failed attempt is useful information for revising the plan; no commercial guarantee can replace the issuer’s rules or the candidate’s own performance.
