The credential has retired; the architecture work continues

Microsoft lists the Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations Apps Solution Architect Expert credential as retired on 30 June 2026. A new learner should not follow an old MB-700 booking plan. The organisation still needs people who connect business processes, integrations, data migration, security and operating constraints. Develop evidence of those responsibilities while choosing any new credential from Microsoft’s current catalogue.

Begin with business boundaries and decisions

For a suggested portfolio case, describe a manufacturer replacing separate finance and inventory systems. Identify legal entities, critical processes, data owners and external services. Separate requirements from proposed products: “close monthly accounts within the agreed process” is a requirement, while “add another integration” is only one possible implementation choice. Record assumptions and the business owner responsible for confirming them.

Design the data and integration story

Draw the flow of products, customers, orders and accounting records between systems. Define which system is authoritative for each field and how failures are detected. For an order interface, consider duplicate messages, delayed status changes and reconciliation. Discuss migration in terms of data cleansing, trial loads, opening balances and sign-off rather than a single import button. Use fictional datasets so the portfolio does not expose a former employer’s information.

Include security, environments and operations

Describe role responsibilities, separation of duties, development and test environments, change approvals and support ownership. A solution design is incomplete if no one can explain who will receive an integration alert or restore a failed process. Write a cutover sequence with verification gates and a rollback decision point. The exercise is to expose dependencies early, not to claim a universal deployment schedule for every organisation.

Prepare for architecture conversations

Practise explaining the same design to finance, warehouse operations, developers and an executive sponsor. Each audience needs different detail but a consistent underlying decision. For every major choice, document the constraint, the selected approach, one alternative and the tradeoff. Review recent Dynamics 365 implementation guidance and current product capabilities. Avoid carrying old MB-700 weights or prerequisites forward as if they still define an available assessment.

Represent your next step accurately

An existing holder should use the status and expiry shown in the Microsoft Learn transcript. A learner may consider current AI architecture credentials where their objectives match the role, but an adjacent credential is not automatically a one-for-one replacement for MB-700. Portfolio quality, implementation experience and stakeholder judgement remain distinct from exam completion. Before buying training, ask whether the provider is teaching a retired exam, transferable architecture skills or a currently bookable credential.

A decision workshop to rehearse

A manufacturer asks for one global chart of accounts but separate local statutory reporting. Sketch the legal entities, shared master data, reporting currencies and integration boundaries before proposing custom code. Ask a finance owner to explain the close process, then record which requirement is statutory and which is a preference. The architecture deliverable should contain the decision, rejected alternatives, reconciliation controls and a named owner for each unresolved question. This is stronger evidence of architecture capability than a diagram without operational consequences.
