Keep database fundamentals at the centre
DP-800 is designed for developing AI-enabled database solutions across Microsoft SQL platforms. The current guide combines database design and development, secure and efficient deployment, and AI capabilities. The presence of vectors does not remove the need to understand T-SQL, data integrity and query performance. Experienced database professionals should identify the new AI areas while still reviewing the whole current outline.
Create a reliable operational schema
For a suggested project, model a fictional product catalogue with transactions, product attributes and document references. Define keys, constraints and the rules that keep records consistent. Write representative queries and inspect their behaviour before introducing AI. A catalogue with duplicate products and broken relationships will not become trustworthy merely because the search interface can generate fluent explanations.
Add semantic retrieval with an explicit test
Use approved sample descriptions to explore embeddings and similarity-based retrieval on a supported platform. Define what a relevant result means and create example queries with expected outcomes. Compare semantic retrieval with exact identifier lookup: a customer searching by part number may need a precise match rather than the most semantically similar item. Explain how structured filtering can narrow the candidate data before an answer is generated.
Apply security across the whole path
Identify which database principal and model endpoint identity perform each operation. Test a user who should see only a subset of the data. A secure table alone is insufficient if an application exports all rows to an unrestricted external component. Keep private production data out of the learning project, avoid hard-coded credentials and document the permissions needed by the integration.
Make optimisation and deployment repeatable
Use a controlled workload to compare query plans and response behaviour before changing indexing or configuration. Track the data size and test conditions so a small demonstration is not misrepresented as a production benchmark. Keep database changes in source control and practise validation before deployment. For AI-assisted SQL suggestions, review correctness, security and transaction effects before accepting generated code.
Study the current version, not an old beta story
The retrieved DP-800 guide includes skills measured from 19 October 2026. Check the dated guide again before booking and use its change information to update older notes. A useful portfolio contains schema decisions, T-SQL, access tests, retrieval evaluation and a deployment procedure. It can support a database-development career conversation, but it cannot guarantee salary or job demand. Verify the live exam status rather than describing the assessment as beta indefinitely.
Use an explainable retrieval case
Create a fictional product catalogue with overlapping descriptions and a few intentionally ambiguous requests. Compare exact relational filtering with semantic retrieval, then explain when the application should combine them. A request for in-stock items under a budget still needs reliable structured constraints; similarity alone cannot enforce the business rule. Capture the selected rows, the reason for each constraint and the behaviour when no valid result exists. This is a more defensible demonstration than presenting only a plausible generated description.
