Move from experiments to an operated service

Machine Learning Professional targets advanced production work on Databricks. The issuer describes scalable pipelines, distributed training and tuning, advanced MLflow, feature pipelines, deployment and monitoring. This makes it especially relevant to engineers responsible for operating models rather than producing an isolated notebook result.

Assess career value against your next assignment. If you cannot yet explain a reliable train–evaluate–deploy workflow, complete a smaller end-to-end project before investing in advanced preparation. A credential can support evidence of engineering judgement, but it cannot guarantee promotion, compensation or production access.

Choose SparkML and scaling deliberately

For a synthetic demand-prediction exercise, begin with the dataset size, feature transformations and inference pattern. Compare a single-node baseline with a SparkML pipeline. Distributed execution adds coordination and resource costs; it is not automatically the correct choice for a small dataset. Document what bottleneck justifies the design.

Separate estimators fitted on training data from transformations applied consistently at scoring time. Test schema changes and missing features. When tuning, control the search budget and record each run with MLflow. Explain whether the task benefits from distributing data, training jobs or independent group-specific models rather than using “scale” as an undifferentiated answer.

Manage features and models as governed assets

Feature Store concepts and Unity Catalog feature engineering address reuse, access and consistency. Build a feature pipeline with explicit keys and time semantics. In a time-dependent example, demonstrate that a prediction does not receive facts created after its decision timestamp. Reproducing training data is as important as reproducing model parameters.

Record the code revision, training input version, feature definitions, environment and model artifact. Use the model registry workflow appropriate to the current platform. Practise explaining which artifact is under review, who can approve promotion and how a reviewer can inspect the evaluation evidence. A model name alone is insufficient provenance.

Deploy with tests and a recovery path

Declarative Automation Bundles, formerly commonly called Asset Bundles, support managing Databricks resources as code. Keep development and production configuration separate and validate changes before promotion. Build tests for input contracts, feature calculations and acceptable prediction behaviour; passing a notebook cell is weaker evidence than a repeatable validation gate.

Choose batch scoring or model serving from latency, throughput and operational requirements. For an illustrative rollout, compare a candidate with the current model using a fixed evaluation set before allowing limited traffic. Define a rollback trigger and retain the previous working model and configuration. Practise a failed deployment in a sandbox so recovery is documented rather than improvised.

Monitor what would change a decision

Track data quality, feature or prediction distribution shifts, model performance when labels arrive and service reliability. Drift is an investigation signal, not automatic proof that a replacement model is better. Define an owner, threshold, response and evidence trail for each alert.

Use the current guide to build a study matrix across model development, MLOps and deployment. Combine focused documentation study with a clean-environment rebuild and timed original scenarios. Review errors by underlying cause: scaling choice, lifecycle control, deployment contract or monitoring interpretation. Register only after checking the live guide and booking rules, and maintain the credential under the issuer’s current policy.
