Begin with the retirement notice
Microsoft retired Azure Security Engineer Associate, its related AZ-500 examination and its renewal assessment on 31 August 2026. As of 25 October, a new candidate cannot use an old AZ-500 guide as current booking instructions. Previously earned certification remains a matter for the official transcript and applicable issuer policy. The underlying work still matters: securing identity, networks, compute and data, managing posture and investigating risk. Choose a current credential by its live scope instead of assuming a replacement code from a training advertisement.
Create an asset and responsibility map
Use a fictional Azure application with a web component, data store and administrator group. Identify the owner of each component, the identities that can modify it and the information it handles. Draw the expected access path. Separate platform responsibilities from customer configuration and governance responsibilities. A security practitioner needs this map before recommending a control, because a technically correct setting can still leave an unowned operational gap. Record the assumptions that require confirmation from developers, administrators or the business.
Test identity and network boundaries
Give a demonstration application only the access required for its task, then test an operation that should fail. Check how administrative privilege is granted and reviewed. For networking, document the permitted source, destination and service, and compare it with the actual effective configuration. A workload that cannot connect may have a name-resolution or application problem rather than an overly restrictive security rule. Diagnose the evidence before broadening access. This develops the judgement needed to improve security without converting every outage into a permission exception.
Prioritise posture findings by exposure and consequence
Use an authorised learning environment to review relevant recommendations in Defender for Cloud and the Microsoft Cloud Security Benchmark. Pick one finding and explain the affected asset, attack opportunity, business impact and proposed owner. Record any exception and its justification. A long list of recommendations is not itself a risk-treatment plan. Fixing a low-impact issue should not distract from an exposed critical resource, and compliance indicators should not be presented as proof that no attack can succeed.
Connect detection to a response
Generate a controlled, non-destructive test event and trace where its evidence appears. Define which signal should trigger action, who investigates and what information they need. Write a containment proposal with its availability impact and approval requirement. Then rehearse a false positive so the process does not assume every alert confirms compromise. Preserve only sanitised evidence in a portfolio. The strongest demonstration connects configuration, observable activity and a repeatable decision process instead of showing a security dashboard with unexplained counts.
Build a current learning and career plan
Review the live Microsoft catalogue and select objectives that address your next role: identity, security operations, architecture or another cloud-security responsibility. Reuse historical AZ-500 lessons only after validating current service names, interfaces and behaviour. Add administration fundamentals if you cannot explain the resources you are securing. Is the retired examination still bookable through a third party? Treat the official retirement notice as authoritative and verify any claim directly with Microsoft. Does the old credential guarantee a security job? No: employers assess experience, practical judgement and role fit. Present a tested access design, a prioritised risk decision and an incident walkthrough alongside accurately dated credentials.
