Match your study material to the booked version

AWS’s Machine Learning Engineer Associate programme is undergoing a version transition, with official information for MLA-C01 and the updated MLA-C02 route. Check the exact examination and language offered in your account. Do not assume an MLA-C01 course completely covers the updated outline.

The role centres on implementing and operating ML solutions. Existing software and data experience can help, but notebook experiments alone do not demonstrate production engineering. Compare your skills with the booked version’s data, model, deployment and operations tasks.

Build a reproducible data pipeline

For a fictional demand prediction task, document the source, schema, missing-value handling and transformation logic. Split evaluation data appropriately for the problem, keeping future information out of training inputs. Record the code and configuration used to create each dataset.

A reproducible pipeline lets you explain why one training run differs from another. Practise detecting a changed input schema and rejecting unsuitable records instead of silently training on them. Choose AWS services according to the current guide and your lab’s authorised budget.

Treat the model as a versioned artefact

Record the training configuration, input data reference, evaluation results and model artefact together. Define acceptance criteria before deployment. A model with improved average accuracy may still fail a business constraint such as unacceptable performance on an important segment.

Use a simple comparison report to explain why a candidate is promoted or rejected. Keep the reasoning with the version. This is more useful MLOps practice than repeatedly retraining until a single metric looks favourable.

Practise deployment and CI/CD decisions

Separate source validation, pipeline execution, model evaluation and deployment approval. A code test proves something different from a model-quality test. Include least-privilege access for the automation and avoid embedding secrets in notebooks or repositories.

In a training environment, deploy a small permitted workload, monitor its behaviour and practise a rollback. Explain the trade-off between a batch inference job and a continuously available endpoint. Consider latency, throughput, cost and how the application consumes the result.

Monitor operations and change over time

A production workflow needs health monitoring, data-quality checks and a response to degraded model performance. Distinguish infrastructure failure from input drift and from a change in the business outcome. Each may require a different investigation.

Write a runbook stating the signal, threshold, owner, first diagnostic step and approved response. Avoid automatically retraining on every change without evaluating data quality and the risk of making performance worse. Log enough information to investigate without collecting unnecessary sensitive data.

Prepare to explain an end-to-end scenario

Use the official guide to check missing tasks, then practise scenarios that combine services and constraints. Include the updated generative-AI material when your booked version requires it. Do not use a historical code as a substitute for reading the active outline.

Is this a career switch guarantee? No. A credible example of a reproducible, monitored workflow can strengthen a discussion about ML engineering capability. Keep cloud costs controlled, remove unused resources and describe precisely which parts of the workflow you implemented yourself.
