Identify the current credential

ACAMS calls its current programme Certified AFC Investigator, formerly Advanced CAMS-Financial Crimes Investigations. It is intended for professionals conducting or supervising complex financial-crime investigations. The current programme is exam-based and supported by structured learning, so verify the live pathway rather than assuming a historical CAMS-FCI process still applies.

Review the handbook, eligibility calculator, membership requirement and account deadlines before purchasing. ACAMS describes eligibility through 60 credits or active CAMS, with substantial relevant experience recommended. Formal eligibility is only one consideration; candidates also need enough practical context to reason about evidence and competing explanations.

Start with a question rather than a conclusion

Use a fictional case involving rapid movement of funds through several related businesses. Record the trigger, known facts, affected accounts, period and initial questions. Consider legitimate explanations as well as suspicious ones. An unusual pattern is an investigation lead, not proof of criminal conduct.

Create a hypothesis table with supporting evidence, contrary evidence and the next information needed. Define the authorised scope and escalation route. Avoid expanding into unrelated personal information simply because it might be interesting. A disciplined investigation remains relevant, proportionate and consistent with institutional procedures.

Build a chronology and relationship map

Organise synthetic transactions, customer information and communications into a chronology. Preserve source references so that another reviewer can trace each statement. Distinguish original records from analyst interpretation. Note missing data and inconsistent identifiers before making connections that depend on them.

A relationship map can clarify common ownership or repeated counterparties, but visual proximity does not establish wrongdoing. Explain the evidence supporting every material relationship. In the fictional case, identify whether apparently separate entities share an authorised business purpose or whether the available information remains incomplete.

Connect typologies with evidence and reporting

Study financial-crime typologies as patterns that guide questions, not as automatic labels. Ask which observations fit, which do not and what additional evidence would change the assessment. Explain the institution’s exposure and the rationale for escalation.

Prepare a concise suspicious-activity narrative exercise using fictional data. Include who, what, when, where and why the activity is concerning, while avoiding unsupported allegations. Reporting duties, thresholds and timing vary by jurisdiction; follow the applicable institutional and regulatory process rather than treating one global training scenario as legal instruction.

Include leadership and case governance

Advanced investigation work includes allocation, prioritisation, quality review and escalation. Define case ownership, decision authority, documentation standards and handover expectations. Consider how the unit handles a complex urgent case without losing track of ordinary work.

Practise reviewing another analyst’s draft. Check factual accuracy, missing alternatives, unclear reasoning and unsupported conclusions. Give feedback that improves the case rather than merely changing style. A supervisor should be able to explain why a case was escalated, closed or returned for further work.

Prepare with complete cases and authorised feedback

Map the current programme’s investigation, typology, reporting and governance areas to exercises. Use official learning and practice resources to locate weak reasoning. Repeat a case with a changed fact so that you must reassess rather than recall the original answer.

Before booking, verify the current examination and access rules in your account. After certification, maintain the applicable education and membership records. For career discussions, show sanitised examples of a chronology, evidence assessment and quality review. These explain how you approach complex work; the credential adds recognition without guaranteeing a particular role or promotion.
