Confirm the modern programme

ACAMS now identifies Certified AFC Auditor as the programme formerly called Advanced CAMS-Audit. Its current description presents an exam-based, structured self-study route. An older article describing a workshop-era pathway may therefore be useful history but should not be used to determine present enrolment requirements.

Download the current handbook from ACAMS and compare it with your purchase or existing designation. Confirm eligibility, membership, learning access and testing authorisation before scheduling. If you already hold a legacy award, use the applicable maintenance guidance rather than assuming all rules changed with the public name.

Scope an audit from risk and objectives

Use a fictional institution reviewing its customer due-diligence process. Define the audit objective, business units, period, systems, exclusions and relevant risks. Identify who owns the process and which evidence can demonstrate that controls operated. Independence and clear boundaries matter as much as a long testing checklist.

Draft a scope statement that another auditor could use. Explain why the selected areas deserve attention and what the audit cannot conclude. If a major outsourced process is excluded, document that limitation instead of implying complete assurance over the customer lifecycle.

Turn a procedure into a testable control

Choose one control, such as approval of high-risk customer onboarding. Identify the required action, authorised approver, timing and retained evidence. Build a test procedure with the population, selection approach, expected result and treatment of exceptions. Use synthetic records for learning exercises.

A checked box may show that someone completed a screen, but not that the decision was appropriate. Inspect the underlying information and approval trail. Separate a missing document from evidence that a required review never occurred. Those findings can have different causes and require different remediation.

Write findings that support action

Create a finding with condition, criteria, cause, consequence and recommendation. Link each conclusion to evidence and distinguish confirmed failure from uncertainty. Discuss the factual basis with the responsible owner while preserving independent judgement. Avoid stronger language than the evidence supports.

For the fictional onboarding audit, a practical recommendation might clarify ownership and introduce overdue-review monitoring. Define who will act, by when and what closure evidence will be accepted. A promised policy update is not automatically evidence that the operating weakness has been resolved.

Use practice examinations as diagnostics

ACAMS includes a practice examination within its current package, with answer-hidden and answer-revealed versions. Do not describe that as an unrestricted free public exam. Verify what is included in your selected package and use only authorised materials.

Take a practice attempt before reading explanations, then classify errors by audit judgement, technical knowledge, evidence interpretation or time management. Return to the relevant case exercise and explain the decision in your own words. A repeated high score can reflect recognition; use a new scenario or changed constraint to test actual understanding.

Finish with follow-up and maintenance

After a simulated remediation deadline, inspect the promised evidence and decide whether the finding can close. Test whether the improvement operated over an appropriate period rather than accepting an undated screenshot. Record residual issues and escalation decisions. This completes the audit lifecycle that preparation should cover.

Confirm the current certification maintenance requirements and retain dated education records. Career evidence can include a sanitised scope, test procedure and finding, demonstrating how you reason independently. The designation supports professional development, but responsible audit work still depends on experience, organisational authority and the quality of your evidence.
